KATIE NOONAN-KARIN SCHAUPP

Songs of the Southern Skies

We are fortunate to have a lot of great music that gets played at our house. Having a husband that has played music for a living, put together line-ups for music festivals and now managing some truly amazing artists means that often the same new music gets played ALOT!  By the time it has reached the general public I'm pretty ready to have a short break from it. Not so with the absolutely beautiful new album Songs of the Southern Skies from Katie Noonan and Karin Schaupp.
You'd be hard pressed to find a reason not to love this album and I am far from ready to take it off my playlist, if anything I'm just loving it more. It ticks a lot of boxes, classic but contemporary, familiar yet beautifully different.
You really just have to have a listen for yourself...

The album explores music close to home and very close to their hearts, featuring some of Australia and New Zealand's best classical, folk, jazz and pop songs - from the Finn Brothers, Cold Chisel, Nick Cave, Icehouse, Bic Runga, Gurrumul, Vince Jones and Gotye, through to traditional folk songs, and world premiere recordings of works written for Katie and Karin by Richard Charlton and Elena Kats-Chernin.
The album has been produced by the duo and recorded in Brisbane, with special guest collaborations being added around the country.

Special guests on the recording include Iva Davies, Gurrumul, Maori diva Whirimako Black, Sydney Symphony oboist Diana Doherty, young members of Brisbane's Voices of Birralee, Clare Bowditch and The Living End’s Chris Cheney. Each one has stepped outside their usual musical territory to collaborate on this unique project. With new arrangements, the songs are performed with the intimate combination of Noonan's angelic and versatile voice and Schaupp's lyrical and fiery guitar.
A feast for lovers of all styles of music, this collaboration brings together two artists at the top of their game, true masters of their fields – artists who have enjoyed the challenge of stretching their musical boundaries, and have become great friends along the way.
